Paul practises across a range of areas, but has a particular focus on medico-legal matters where he utilises his past experience and training as a doctor to his clients’ advantage. Recently he acted for Te Whatu Ora on the high profile Baby W case relating to guardianship orders. He has also acted on some of New Zealand’s most high profile health and safety matters including the Mangatepopo Tragedy in 2008, the 2011 Auckland Gas Explosion, the Pike River Royal Commission of Inquiry, and successfully defended Waste Management (both at trial and on appeal) in the first trial of a corporate entity for reckless conduct under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
Throughout Paul’s legal career he has appeared as counsel in all levels of the New Zealand judicial system, including the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.
Paul is regularly instructed to act for DHBs, private hospitals, health professionals, rest homes and insurers, as well as a range of other corporate clients and individuals who value his clear and practical advice in addition to his advocacy in a court or alternative dispute resolution setting.
Paul accepts instructions through solicitors, but is also able to act on a number of matters without an instructing solicitor in certain areas.
